Wellspring College joined the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) and FT Cycle Care, a Nigerian based cycling organization in celebrating the first official United Nations World Bicycle Day. The World Bicycle Day is a day of awareness about the societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure and its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The World Bicycle Day was approved by the United Nations April 12, 2018 and will be celebrated on the 3rd of June every year.
At the school`s premises, Assistant Corps Marshal John Meheux, the Lagos and Ogun FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer emphasized the benefits of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable means of transportation. He further added that the bicycle could serve as a tool for development by providing access to education and healthcare. He admonished the students and staff to consider the bicycle as their means of daily transportation to school and work.
Mr. Femi Thomas, the President of FT Cycle Care, spoke on the synergy between the bicycle and its user, how it makes the user aware of his environment and promotes creativity. He also added that cycling impacts positively on the environment and general well-being of cyclists.
