On Wednesday, 12th December, 2018, some of our SS1 and SS2 students visited the Ebute-Metta hub of Wecyclers, a Lagos-based recycling plant, to learn about the waste recycling process.
We were welcomed by the hub manager, Mrs. Kikelomo Ayoola, who took us on a tour of the hub. We were taken through the sorting section where waste materials are sorted based on type and color, and impurities like labels are removed. We then moved to the bailing section where the sorted materials are compressed with a bailing machine for easy transportation to end users who use them to make new products.
It was interesting to learn that waste paper, cartons, cardboard and plastic containers can be recycled to make a lot of beautiful new products. Plastic containers can be used to make sweat shirts and skiing jackets. Recycled plastic bottle covers can be used to make slippers and recycled papers can be used to make toilet rolls.
We can promote environmental sustainability, socio-economic development and community health through gathering up our waste for recycling and reusing our water, drink and food containers as many times as possible.
We are most grateful to the Wecyclers team for such an insightful excursion.
